# DotMD > DotMD is a Mac app for the Markdown your AI agents write. Read any .md file rendered, > comment on the exact passage, and let Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any MCP client fix it: > every change shows up in the file for you to accept, like a pull request for documents. > It is also a native Markdown reader and editor. Everything stays on your Mac. - Review: comments tied to passages and lines; fixes shown in the file (old text in red, new in green); Accept, Reopen, Accept All. - Agents over MCP: DotMD runs a local MCP server (http://127.0.0.1:8089/mcp); agents open files, read your comments, fix them and send drafts for review (request_review). - Reading: tables, code with highlighting, Mermaid diagrams, KaTeX formulas, callouts, footnotes, front matter; Quick Look in Finder. - Editing and history: live preview; every change saved to the file; a version kept whenever anyone changes the file; compare, revert one block, restore. ## Key facts - Platform: macOS 14 or later (see Links for where to get it). - Site languages (12): English, Czech, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Portugal), Russian, Ukrainian, Traditional Chinese (English at the addresses below; each other language under its prefix: /cs/, /de/, /es/, /fr/, /it/, /ja/, /pl/, /pt/, /ru/, /uk/, /zh-hant/, as in https://getdotmd.com/de/guides). - No account. Files, comments and history stay on the Mac. The MCP server listens on localhost only. - Reading is free. DotMD Editor adds editing, search across files, export and version history; DotMD Reviewer adds comments and reviews, agents over MCP, highlighted history and AI actions. - Trial: the version downloaded from getdotmd.com includes a free 3-day trial of all features (DotMD Reviewer), once per Mac, with no account and no payment needed. The Mac App Store version has no trial for now. - Made by a solo developer. ## Best uses - Reviewing specs, plans and design docs written by Claude Code, Codex or Cursor. - One agent reviewing another agent's draft, with you moderating the comments. - Reading READMEs and docs folders rendered; editing Markdown with a live preview. ## Connect an agent - Claude Code: `claude mcp add -s user --transport http dotmd http://127.0.0.1:8089/mcp` - Codex: `[mcp_servers.dotmd]` with `url = "http://127.0.0.1:8089/mcp"` and `tool_timeout_sec = 3600` in ~/.codex/config.toml (tool_timeout_sec lets Codex wait while you review). - Cursor, Visual Studio Code and other MCP clients: `{"mcpServers":{"dotmd":{"type":"http","url":"http://127.0.0.1:8089/mcp"}}}` - An agent in a Docker container: use http://host.docker.internal:8089/mcp instead of 127.0.0.1. - The ChatGPT app can't connect (it reaches MCP servers from the internet, DotMD answers only on the Mac); use Codex for OpenAI's models. - DotMD must be open while the agent works (Settings → MCP → Start with DotMD). ## Privacy - No accounts. Your files, comments, versions and settings stay on your Mac; we can't see them. - A DotMD purchase is recorded under a random ID, without your name. Apple or Paddle take the payment under their own policies. - AI actions send text only to the provider you set up with your own key (or run on the Mac with Apple Intelligence), never to us. - Anonymous usage statistics (which features are used, never your files or text) can be turned off in Settings. No advertising, no selling of data. Full policy: https://getdotmd.com/privacy ## Pricing - Free: reading Markdown files, forever. - DotMD Editor $14.99 once, DotMD Reviewer $39.99 once; Editor owners upgrade to Reviewer for $24.99. - Editor: editing with live preview, search across files, export, print, copy, version history (browse and restore). Reviewer adds reviews with agents, comments, agents over MCP, highlighted history and AI actions. - US prices as of 2026-11-08; prices vary by country. ## Links - Site: https://getdotmd.com/ - Availability: direct download (DMG) - Mac App Store: coming soon - Direct download (DMG): https://downloads.getdotmd.com/DotMD-1.0.19-35.dmg - Support: support@getdotmd.com - FAQ: https://getdotmd.com/#faq ## Pages - [Home](https://getdotmd.com/): what DotMD does, the review loop with agents, the reader and editor, pricing and FAQ. - [Guides](https://getdotmd.com/guides): step-by-step guides to connecting agents, reviewing and reading. - [Claude Code](https://getdotmd.com/guides/claude-code): connect Claude Code with one command and review its plans and specs. - [Codex](https://getdotmd.com/guides/codex): add DotMD to Codex (app, CLI, IDE extension), tool_timeout_sec, AGENTS.md. - [Cursor](https://getdotmd.com/guides/cursor): add DotMD to Cursor, Visual Studio Code or any MCP client. - [MCP server](https://getdotmd.com/guides/mcp-server): turn the server on, the tools an agent can call, Recent Requests, security, Docker. - [CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md](https://getdotmd.com/guides/claude-md-agents-md): read and edit your agent's instruction files, and add DotMD's review rules to them in one click. - [Claude Code plan mode](https://getdotmd.com/guides/claude-code-plan-mode): where Claude Code saves its plans (~/.claude/plans, plansDirectory), and how to read, comment on and approve them. - [Codex plan mode](https://getdotmd.com/guides/codex-plan-mode): Codex's /plan proposes a plan in the chat;
