Reviewing with AI agents, connecting them over MCP, reading and editing Markdown, purchases and privacy. Pick a topic or scroll.

macOS 14 or later. Reading is free; DotMD Pro has a 3-day free trial.

Quick answer

DotMD is a Markdown reader and editor for Mac with review built in: you comment on a passage, your AI agent fixes it, and you accept every change. Reading is free; comments, reviews and agents over MCP are part of DotMD Pro. Your files stay on your Mac.

DotMD and getting started

Do I need an account?

No. There are no accounts. Your files, comments and history stay on your Mac. The purchase is tied to an anonymous ID that syncs through your iCloud, so it works on all your Macs.

Where is the guide?

In DotMD, press ⇧⌘H or choose Help → DotMD Guide. It is also in Settings → About. The guide covers every feature, with the shortcuts.

DotMD can't open a file an agent mentions

DotMD opens only files it has access to: the folders in your workspace, Downloads and, if you allowed it, your Home folder (Settings → Files). Add the folder to the workspace (⌘O) and the agent can show you the file.

Which macOS do I need?

macOS 14 or later.

Is there a Linux or Windows version?

No, DotMD is a Mac app (macOS 14 or later).

Review with agents

Why not just review in the chat?

In a chat you quote a paragraph, the agent rewrites half the file, and you can't tell what changed. In DotMD a comment is tied to the passage, the fix shows as a diff next to it, and every version of the file is kept. It's a code review, for a document.

Does Claude Code spend tokens while it waits for my review?

No. It waits in one tool call until you click Send or Approve, however long you take.

Can Claude Code review a document Codex wrote?

Yes. Claude Code leaves its comments on the lines, you keep the ones that matter, and Codex fixes them. See One agent reviews another.

DotMD says "Waiting for review" but I see no comments to make

That's the agent waiting for you: it sent the document with request_review. Read it, comment where needed, then Send, or Approve if it's fine as is. Stop Waiting releases the agent without an answer.

The agent changed things I didn't ask for

Open the Review panel: changes no comment asked for are listed under Other changes. Every version of the file is in Version History (⌥⌘Y), so you can revert a single block or the whole file.

Are comments saved in the .md file?

No. DotMD keeps them, so the file has no markers or HTML comments, and other apps see it as it was.

Can I comment without an agent?

Yes, as notes to yourself on a draft.

Agents and MCP

Which agents work with DotMD?

Any MCP client: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and others. One URL, http://127.0.0.1:8089/mcp, in the agent's MCP settings. DotMD's guide has the exact line for each.

How do I connect an agent?

Settings → MCP → MCP server; the status turns green. Then add the server to the agent: for Claude Code, claude mcp add --transport http dotmd http://127.0.0.1:8089/mcp; for Codex, Cursor, Visual Studio Code and others, the same URL in their MCP settings. The guide has the exact steps for each, including the Codex setting tool_timeout_sec, which must be long so the agent can wait for your review.

Does the agent need DotMD to be open?

Yes — DotMD runs the MCP server while it's open. Settings → MCP → Start with DotMD keeps it ready.

Port 8089 is taken

Change the port in Settings → MCP, turn the server off and on, and update the URL in the agent's settings.

My agent runs in Docker

From a container, use http://host.docker.internal:8089/mcp. Other computers can't reach the server: it listens on this Mac only.

Recent Requests shows nothing, or shows requests in red

Nothing: the agent isn't reaching DotMD. Check the URL in the agent's settings, http://127.0.0.1:8089/mcp (the port is in Settings → MCP), and that DotMD is open: the server runs only while DotMD runs. Red: the request was refused, and the row says why; the usual cause is a file outside the folders DotMD may open (see "Getting started").

Why does Codex stop waiting for my review?

Its tool timeout is short by default. Add tool_timeout_sec = 3600 to DotMD's server in config.toml and restart Codex.

Can other computers reach DotMD's MCP server?

No. It listens on 127.0.0.1 only. Docker containers on this Mac can, through host.docker.internal.

Can the agent change files without me?

DotMD's server never writes files. The agent edits files as it always does, and you see every change in DotMD.

Reading and editing

I need an earlier version of a file

Open the file and press ⌥⌘Y. Versions are listed by day, with what changed highlighted. Restore puts a version back; on the current version you can also revert one changed block. Older versions are thinned out the way Time Machine does, everything from the last day, then hourly, daily and weekly, up to 200 per file; the history of a file that has been gone for 30 days is removed. Version history is a convenience, not a backup.

What is the orange dot in the sidebar?

Another app, an agent, git, an editor, changed that file since you last opened it. Open it and DotMD shows the changes first; Done returns to normal reading.

Pasted images: where do they go?

Next to the document, in an assets folder, as PNG files. The Markdown gets a relative link, so the document stays portable.

A diagram or formula doesn't render

Mermaid and KaTeX are loaded from a content delivery network the first time they are needed, so the first render needs an internet connection. Check the syntax at mermaid.js.org or katex.org; DotMD shows the error text under the block.

How do I make .md files open in DotMD?

Select one in Finder, press ⌘I, choose DotMD under Open with and click Change All….

Do diagrams and formulas work offline?

Yes. Mermaid diagrams and KaTeX formulas are drawn on your Mac.

Is there a Save button?

No. Every change goes to the file at once; ⌘Z undoes it, and Version History keeps earlier versions.

Can I export a page?

Yes, with DotMD Pro: PDF, HTML, Copy as Rich Text, Copy HTML Source, or print.

How long are versions kept?

Everything from the last day, then one an hour for a week, one a day for a month, one a week after that, up to 200 per file.

Pricing and purchases

Is reviewing free?

Reading is free. Comments, reviews and agents over MCP are part of DotMD Pro: Yearly with a 3-day free trial, or Lifetime. See Pricing.

How does the free trial work?

The Yearly plan starts with a free trial, once per customer. Everything is open during it; Settings shows the day it ends. If you don't cancel before that day, the subscription starts and the year is charged. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end to avoid the charge.

How do I cancel the Yearly subscription?

App Store: App Store → Account → Subscriptions, or DotMD → Settings → Manage Subscription, which opens the same place. Direct purchase: Manage Subscription in DotMD's Settings or the link in Paddle's receipt email. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid the next charge; Pro stays until the end of the period you paid for, and Settings then says "ends" instead of "renews".

Can I move from Yearly to Lifetime?

Yes: open DotMD → DotMD Pro… while subscribed and buy Lifetime; then cancel the subscription as above. Nothing is lost in between.

Can I get a refund?

App Store purchases: through Apple. Direct purchases: write to support within 14 days and you get a refund through Paddle, no questions asked. The yearly plan starts with a free trial, so you can try everything first.

I need an invoice

Direct purchases: Paddle's receipt email has a link to the invoice, and Paddle can add your company's details to it. App Store purchases: the receipt comes from Apple, in App Store → Account → Purchase History.

Is DotMD free for reading?

Yes. Reading any Markdown, folders, tabs and Quick Look are free, forever.

Do I need DotMD Pro to edit?

Yes. Editing is part of DotMD Pro: Yearly with a 3-day free trial, or Lifetime. Reading is free.

Privacy and data

Where are my files and comments?

Your Markdown files stay where they are on disk; DotMD edits them in place and never copies them anywhere. Comments and version history live in DotMD's own storage in your user Library. Nothing is uploaded.

Does DotMD send my files anywhere?

No. The server answers only on your Mac, and your files, comments and history stay there. Claude Code itself works with Anthropic as it always does.

Where do the AI actions run?

On your Mac with Apple Intelligence, or with your own API key for the provider you choose. The text goes straight from your Mac to that provider. DotMD has no server in between.

Does an AI action send my document somewhere?

With Apple Intelligence, no: it runs on the Mac. With a provider, the selected text or the document goes straight from your Mac to that provider, under its policy, and only when you run an action. Nothing passes through us.

What do you know about me?

For most people: nothing. If you bought Pro, a purchase record under an anonymous ID (plan, store, dates, country) and, for direct purchases, the email Paddle collected for the receipt. Details on the privacy page.

Uninstalling DotMD

Drag DotMD to the Trash. Your Markdown files are untouched. DotMD's own data, comments, history and settings, stays in ~/Library/Containers/com.sov.dotmd (in Finder: Go → Go to Folder…); delete that folder too if you don't plan to come back.

Updates and versions

Which version do I have, and where did it come from?

Settings → About shows the version. Whether DotMD came from the App Store or from getdotmd.com matters for purchases and updates: the App Store version updates through the App Store and has no Check for Updates item; the direct version has one in the DotMD menu.

App Store or direct download?

Same app, same price, same Pro. The direct version updates itself; the App Store version updates through the App Store. A purchase from either works in both.

"Check for Updates" finds nothing, or the update doesn't install

The direct version checks getdotmd.com once a day and when you ask. If DotMD runs from the DMG or from Downloads, move it to Applications first: updates install there. If an update still fails, download the latest version from this site and replace the app; your files, comments and history are untouched. The App Store version updates through the App Store.
